Outside the Box at YoungArts
Miami, FL – November 7, 2015 – In the first of an exciting new season of Outside the Box multi-disciplinary performances at the National YoungArts Foundation campus, Complexions Contemporary Ballet—co-founded by Tony Award-nominated Broadway performer, 1986 YoungArts Winner in Modern Dance and U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, Desmond Richardson—welcomed more than 700 guests to the YoungArts Plaza. YoungArts members in attendance included Ashley Turchin, George Lindemann and Francinelee Hand, as well as designer/performance artist Karelle Levy and Tattooed Ballerina and Knight Arts Finalist Hattie Mae Williams. For weeks, Complexions Contemporary Ballet had been rehearsing an original work by Master Choreographer Dwight Rhoden, soon to be premiered at the Joyce Theater in New York. Their performance at Outside the Box was a culmination of a residency at the YoungArts Jewel Box, and featured outtakes – both new and favorites – from their expansive repertoire. Bringing audiences through a range of emotions, Richardson graced the stage in a moving solo performance, before tens of dancers closed the evening with a powerful choreography set to Metallica. Sponsored by ArtPlace America, Outside the Box engages the public, inspires artists, and serves as a catalyst for neighborhood transformation. Starr Catering Group offered beverages and light bites, and additional support was provided by the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, The Children’s Trust, Wells Fargo, and IKEA.
