Science Up Close: Brain Surgery While Awake at Frost Science
Miami, FL – March 19, 2015 – The Patricia and Philip Frost Museum of Science kicked off Brain Day, a three-day event presented by Baptist Health South Florida, with the Museum’s popular Science Up Close event series, which consists of themed evenings of casual science conversations. This installment featured Dr. Vitaly Siomin, Medical Director of the Brain Tumor Program at Baptist Health Neuroscience Center. Following an introduction by Dr. Sergio Gonzalez-Arias, Medical Director of Baptist Health Neuroscience Center, Dr. Siomin discussed “Brain Surgery While Awake,” a presentation on awake craniotomy, brain surgery on a patient who is awake, which is performed through brain stimulation and mapping. Small group discussions led by neuroscience professionals including scientists, researchers, and graduate students followed the presentation. Guests enjoyed music by the Frost School of Music along with complimentary beverages by Wynwood Brewing Company.
