Q&A: The Neighbourhood at BleauLive
The Neighbourhood
Miami Beach, FL – April 25, 2014 – Miamians may not actually be too familiar with sweater weather, but they sure are familiar with the hit song which has recently taken the charts by storm. The Neighbourhood, the band behind the infamous song “Sweater Weather,” is made up of five friends from California whose sound is a strong combination of rock instruments with R&B and hip-hop aesthetics. They’re talented, cool, and sure do know how to put on a show. Before hitting the stage at Fontainebleau’s fabulous BleauLive venue, we were able to catch up with the band and hear a little about what’s going on in the world of these musical heartthrobs.

Tell us a little about how the Neighbourhood formed?
We were all very good friends and each played different instruments so we eventually just met through other bands and started making music.
What was it like to hear your song on the radio for the first time?
Super cool, every time we hear it we still get excited because there is no other time we really listen to our songs now other than playing them all the time, and that is very different. When we hear it on the radio it’s like woah, this is what people hear, this is what we sound like.
The Neighbourhood
If you guys could describe your band as a landscape what would it look like?
Kind of like that perfect desert horizon, with a hill where you would see the darker sand coming towards you with a really bright, light sky; really contrasty.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
We all pull from different places and then pull from each other to make what we make. We also grab inspiration from things like bands and sports we enjoyed back in the day to as well as what we like now.
The Neighbourhood
What genre do you consider yourself?
To be honest, we can’t really even put ourselves in one specific genre. It’s more just about music that we want to make.
Can you think of a moment that defines the character of your band?
We don’t think we’ve had that moment yet because we believe that when the time comes the world is going to let us know when that moment is, to the point where you won’t even have to ask us that question, you’ll just know. I think we need to be given that respect from the world because we can think what we’re doing is cool, but of course it’s also about how other people perceive us.
The Neighbourhood
What music festival are you most looking forward to play at this summer?
We’re doing a lot of European festivals and especially excited to play Reading Leads in the UK.
What do you think about the music scene in Miami? Could it use more or less of something in particular?
Miami has Rick Ross so there’s not much more you need. Seriously, every rapper comes here and mentions Miami, that’s cool enough. Miami is like a more legit Las Vegas because there’s an ocean.
The Neighbourhood
How did it feel knowing your song Honest was going to be a part of the “Amazing Spiderman II” soundtrack?
It was really cool; we are super excited about it. They approached us and asked to make a song for the movie so it’s a great feeling to be a part of such a major film like that.
