The Art of Mindy Solomon Gallery
Miami, FL – October 16, 2013 – There’s a new gallery in town, Wynwood to be exact. It’s home to the new Mindy Solomon Gallery, which recently celebrated its grand opening with “Renaissance Men,” a solo exhibition by Generic Art Solutions. The exhibit, which is the work of American Matt Vis and British-born Tony Campbell (the duo is better known as G.A.S.), will run until November 16. The work examines the human condition, dysfunction in society, and drama through a variety of mediums including photography, performance, video and print.
Solomon brings with her two decades of international art experience as an educator, collector and gallerist. “I am thrilled to open my new gallery in Wynwood,” Solomon says. “Watching the art market explode in Miami over the past several years inspired me to make the move. The work of Generic Art Solutions is an ideal choice for our first exhibition as the work is resplendent with historical references that quickly engage public response.” Below, she shares with us her story and the art that’s currently coloring it.
Why did you choose Wynwood to open your gallery?
Because I see the area rapidly expanding and the quality and diversity of the gallery programs are very exciting.
What is your background in art?
I have an undergrad degree in Art Education, a Master of Arts degree in Fine and Applied Arts and extensive graduate course work in Art Therapy.
Tell us about the grand opening event.
The opening was very positive. A lot of quality people attended—in other words, people that had a strong interest in the arts and were intrigued by the subject of the exhibition. I felt very welcomed to the community and anticipate seeing the same faces at our other events.
Your first exhibition is by G.A.S. Can you tell me a little about why you decided on this?
I think that the Generic Arts Solutions collaborative team of Matt Vis and Tony Campbell bring a fresh and dynamic approach to contemporary art by re-interpreting historic masterwork paintings through performative video and photography. They enable the public to bridge the past with the present.
What does the work say to you?
The work feels familiar and engaging. Most viewers respond positively.
What do you have in store for Basel?
I will be exhibiting at Art Miami and plan to bring the work of James Kennedy, Dominique Labauvie, Marc Lambrechts and Kang Hyo Lee. It will be beautiful, minimal and elegant abstraction. There will be a mix of 2- and 3-dimensional pieces.
Where’s your favorite place to see art in Wynwood?
That is a difficult question to answer, as I have not seen everything here yet. I like going to all the galleries because they offer such a wide array of choices. I think there is something for everyone.
