No Pain, No Gain at Barry’s Bootcamp
Miami Beach, FL – October 12, 2013 – Abs of flab? Ass of sag? Time to sign up for Barry’s Bootcamp. The new gym will be opening soon in Miami Beach. Last week, locals like Ashley Turchin got the chance to test out what Barry’s has to offer when the gym did a pop up class at The Fontainebleau. “I got a little taste of what’s in store when they open in Sunset Harbour this December,” Turchin says. Under the leadership of Derek DeGrazio, Turchin and guests were whipped into shape doing crunches, push-ups, squats and other muscle-building exercise. “This was the first bootcamp of any kind that I have ever tried because, to be honest, I was scared of getting my butt kicked to this extreme,” Turchin says.
The arrival of Barry’s Bootcamp marks its first outpost in Florida. It’s something both locals and the people behind Barry’s are thrilled about. “This past summer I watched people come out of Barry’s in the Hamptons and it was a scary sight. But I dragged my super ripped and athletic boyfriend with me and am happy we did it together. It was an awesome, full-body workout, and I look forward to making it part of our routine. Some of my workouts are somewhat girly, so I’m excited to have another excuse to work out with my man. Barry’s is for everyone,” Turchin explains. If it’s a hardcore workout you’re after, this is it. Expains Turchin, “I worked parts of my body that were never worked that hard before and it was extremely difficult to get out of bed the next day. Not sure if it was the soreness speaking or I was growing abs. I regretted this workout—said no one ever,” she jokes.
We caught up with the men behind Barry’s, James Provencher and DeGrazio, to get the scoop on what the local set can look forward to just in time for that extra holiday weight.

When is Barry’s Bootcamp opening in Miami Beach?
JP: Our goal is to open up in December. We want to make sure every detail is 100 percent perfect, so if we end up opening in January, it is just because we strive for perfection.
Why Miami as your first Florida location?
JP: We started in Los Angeles and then ventured to New York, London and Nashville. Miami seemed like it was the next evolutionary step. Being a city that prides itself on being fit, sexy and a mecca for people that love an active lifestyle, we could not think of any other city that made more sense than this amazing place.

I see the schedule is broken up into body parts. Why?
DD: During the course of one week, you can get a complete body workout, which is essential to achieve maximum results.
What is the philosophy behind Barry’s?
DD: To maximize fat burn, while building lean, strong, toned muscle. By doing both cardio and strength training intervals, we offer one of the most efficient workouts.
How do you differ from CrossFit?
DD: It’s different from CrossFit like it’s different from spinning, yoga, Pilates, etc. We all are our own unique concept and compliment each other so well. As an instructor, of course Barry’s is my primary source of exercise. I love jumping in all of these other classes as well.
What event did you put on at the Fontainebleau?
DD: We did a preview class to introduce our concept to Miami residents. It was great. But there’s nothing like the real thing. We’re looking forward to opening our doors soon.
Tell me about opening up in what has now become the fitness block.
JP: When we first started flying out from L.A. to view spaces, we looked at the space in Sunset Harbour first. The moment we walked in, we knew it was perfect. We have amazing neighbors (FlyWheel, Green Monkey yoga, etc.). It was like the universe was giving us so many complimentary companies that we could work side-by-side with. The only thing missing from the block was Barry’s Bootcamp.

Anything else you want to add?
DD: See you in class.
