Special Olympics Sponsor An Athlete Awards

Miami Beach, FL – September 21, 2013 – This year’s Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade County (SOMDC) 2013 Annual Sponsor An Athlete Awards Dinner celebrated Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day by honoring their most outstanding athletes, coaches, volunteers and supporters at the La Gorce Country Club. Guests included DJ Irie, baseball player Chris Duffy, and former American soccer player, Joe-Max Moore, to name a few. County Athlete of the Year awardee, Kevin Roundtree who is a senior at South Ridge High in Homestead was also presented a full scholarship to the Our Pride Academy (www.ourprideacademy.org) by Cristina Cartaya. Andy Miyares, Global Messenger, presented the Family of the Year Award to his mother, Ana Maria Miyares. Dwight Whipple received the Coach of the Year Award, named after his mentor, former Special Olympics Coach Carole MacArthur.

The evening also included documentaries by award-winning filmmaker Carl Kesser that highlighted each of the awardees. Title sponsor 123 Lumpsum’s Andrew Savysky was acknowledged for his professional and personal commitment with his training with SOMDC’s Track Athlete Nasif. The night was hosted by Miami Herald columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry. Music was powered by The Spam Allstars who kept guests on their feet throughout the night and the decor was curated by The Design Group. Presenting Sponsor was Wells Fargo Advisors.
