Tori Kelly & Alexander Mijares

Miami Beach, FL – April 19, 2013 – Art and music came together for a special showcase at The Raleigh Hotel on Friday night. The breakout 20 year-old musician Tori Kelly joined creative forces with upcoming Miami artist Alexander Mijares for the night, which also honored two important causes. Proceeds benefitted the FIU College of Architecture + The Arts, and a donation was made to The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service in light of the recent tragedy in Boston. The turnout had over 250 friends, fans, art enthusiasts, and philanthropists come out to support the arts and great causes at The Raleigh’s oasis behind the hotel on the sand. Tori Kelly gave an inspiring acoustic performance, while Mijares had his latest collection of works displayed, including some never-before-seen pieces. He also presented Kelly with a custom guitar painted with his signature designs for her tour, ending the night on a high note.

Here’s a little more about this local artist, Alexander Mijares. The Miami born and raised creative stumbled into the art world as an accidental artist who just had a passion for drawing and doodling, without thinking the pursuit would lead him to be one of the hottest talents emerging from Miami right now. His works are inspired by a particular exotic excursion, his Cuban and Spanish heritage, or a person of interest- usually a woman. Making his debut just over a year ago with a successful first exhibit opening in February 2012, Mijares is making a name for himself. He has collaborated with international artists like Kenor and graffiti artist Pez, and headlined at Art Basel Miami Beach, Art Wynwood, and more. WRE wanted to know more about his style and what’s coming next, so we got some insight from the artist. Check out what he had to say below.

Tori Kelly

“The design on the guitar was inspired by the emotions I feel when listening to music. I often listen to Spanish guitar while painting and have found that the tone really affects my strokes and comes through in my designs.  It’s a very sensual look from something I like to call ‘Making Music through the Art,’ which helps people actually hear the music just by looking at the colors and smooth lines.”

Alexander Mijares

“I could not think of a better place to be a local artist than Miami. The culture and people have done so much more than inspire me, they have embraced me and been a driving force in my success. I sincerely hope I can make Miami proud as I continue to grow internationally.”

“My style is constantly evolving. Every painting is slightly different from the last, and with each day that passes, I become more and more confident in my talent, which drives me to push the envelope, think bigger and try new techniques.”

“As for what’s next, I am constantly exploring new projects and how to create a ‘wow’ factor. Nothing brings a smile to my face more than inspiring the uninspired.”
