Q&A: Del Toro x Alec Monopoly Limited Edition Launch at The Webster

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

1-Alec-Monopoly10

Alec Monopoly

Miami, FL – January 4, 2015 – There’s something about a fresh new pair of kicks that has a way of making one feel like a million bucks. What do you get when one of the hottest shoe brands in the game pairs up with a well-known street artist? Let’s just say it’s enough to make you wait in line at The Webster in hopes of snagging one of these exclusive pairs of shoes. Del Toro shoes has collaborated with graffiti artist Alec Monopoly to produce the limited edition “perfect pair.” Using the signature styles of Del Toro’s sneaker mixed with Monopoly’s signature “Monopoly Man” style the two have found a way to create something that is truly unique and certainly stands out from the rest.

Although you may have never seen what his face actually looks like, his work most definitely stands out and speaks for itself. With Monopoly’s use of varied materials including stencils, spray paint, epoxies, varnishes and newspapers, his work subversively is used to depict various iconic pop culture characters. Whether it’s using boats, cars, buildings, and now shoes, there aren’t many canvases Monopoly hasn’t tackled. His work has been covered by countless news and media outlets including The Wall Street Journal, Rolling Stone, Playboy, London Times, and Billboard magazine and this only seems to be the beginning of an epic career.

Before the successful launch at The Webster, we were fortunate enough to speak with Co-Founder and Creative Director of Del Toro shoes, Matt Chevallard, and the artist himself, Alec Monopoly, about their latest collaboration and how Monopoly has been making his way through the art world.

2-IMG_6151

WRE: What made you choose Alec Monopoly as your next collaboration with Del Toro shoes?

MC: Alec and I have been friends for years now. It was a very organic project because despite our friendship, we had not considered doing a project together until one day we each wondered why we hadn’t and then we subsequently worked on one together. The result was great and we are both happy to see a byproduct from our relationship.

WRE: How did your signature “monopoly” theme come about?

AM: I started tagging The Monopoly Man back in 2008 in the midst of the Economic Crisis. The world felt like it was collapsing, and the Monopoly Man felt like a natural satirical answer to that. It’s since morphed and taken on new meaning, I believe a lot in ambition and hustling to get what you want in life and my art pushes that theme.

WRE: What message are you trying to communicate with your art?

AM: Originally it started as a commentary on capitalism and corporate greed. Those themes are still there, but it’s also taken on an inspirational element. Skies the limit sort of thing. If you put your mind to anything you can achieve it, and characters like The Monopoly Man and Richie Rich who represent wealth and success are very overt examples of that.

2.5-IMG_6582

WRE: What does “being creative” mean to you?

AM: I think being creative is just pursuing whatever it is your passionate about. Whether it’s finding creative solutions to problems in business, making a beat, or painting on a canvas, creativity and passion are very closely linked in my opinion.

WRE: What’s the most unusual thing you have created work on?

AM: I’ve painted boats, cars, shoes, buildings; You name it I’ve painted on it.

WRE: Did Monopoly have total control over the design of the shoe? Or was it more of a collaboration?

MC: It was a collaboration. We incorporated the notions of his brand with mine. We immediately were drawn to a theme of capitalism and dollar bills but also wanted to do it discreetly at the same time. I had told him how I had been working with my factory on a new sole technique which allows us to customize sole types in a new way. We were happy with doing so because it brought a new approach and allowed for the upper to be more understated. After all, who doesn’t want to be walking on hundreds, literally. So we decided to launch our new sole series with Alec and commemorate the project by doing so. You will be seeing more of this style with expressive soles in the future.

3-IMG_6604

WRE: How can admirers snag a pair of these sneakers?

MC: Everything is very exclusive and was sold out the first day of the release. This is the second colorway we are doing after releasing the White version during New York Fashion Week and at Colette. Stay tuned for future releases!

Del Toro x Typoe Shoe Launch

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013

Typoe

Miami Beach, FL – April 26, 2013 – What do you get when the artist-of-the-moment teams up with the hottest shoes at the moment? The freshest footwear to hit the market: Del Toro x TYPOE limited edition shoes, now available to add instant coolness to your feet. Typoe, a Miami-based artist and co-founder of Primary Flight, has joined forces with Matthew Chevallard, owner of local “it” shoe brand Del Toro, to create a limited edition wingtip that can be worn by both men and women. These two young creatives have come up with a spring time style perfect for the vibrant Miami crowd and anyone looking to add a splash of color to their look. The limited edition wingtip style is now available online and at the Del Toro boutique in Wynwood. The Webster is stocking two styles, as they feature the original Del Toro x TYPOE collaboration as well as a special edition exclusively made for the very trendy boutique on South Beach.

Friday night kicked off the official launch of the collaboration at an invite-only event at The Webster. Everyone got to see the the two new styles for themselves first hand at the launch, with some even purchasing the first pairs to hit shelves. Cocktails were sipped as friends and guests got to talk shoes with Chevallard, Typoe, and founder of Spinello Projects and longtime collaborator with Typoe, Anthony Spinello. See what else these cool, creative minds have to say about the collaboration below.

Typoe

Typoe: It was kind of a natural fit. We just started hanging out, and it just happened. [Matt]’s really cool. We have a similar vision and direction we’re going in. He was like ‘Dude, let’s do something rad!’ and I was like ‘Yeah!’ So I submitted this, and he loved it. We talked to The Webster, they wanted their own color scheme, and it just worked out. Everything was really natural and fun.

Matt Chevallard & Typoe

Matt Chevallard: The Artist Series was influential and appropriate for our move into Wynwood and the next development stage we were at, which was moving into offices and becoming a more mature company. So we just moved our headquarters to Wynwood, and The Artist Series kind of made sense. It went with the way I wanted to develop the line in a diversified, unique way. Artists embody a lot of unique identities, and that translates well in footwear.

Anthony Spinello, Matt Chevallard, & Typoe

Matt Chevallard, Anthony Spinello, & Typoe

Anthony Spinello: I think the collaboration is very smart. I think it’s fresh. I’m not surprised that two young, artistic, forward-thinking guys collaborated on a pretty fresh, new shoe together. Like-minded people often find themselves working together. Typoe and I have been working together for almost eight years now, so I’m really happy about the collaboration.

Anthony Spinello

Typoe

Typoe: I think art and fashion, even music, they’re all related. We all hang out anyway. We’re all in the same scene and friends; it’s less of a business thing where we set up a serious meeting first. It’s more like we’re just hanging out and say ‘Hey, let’s make something together because we just love what we do’.

Matt Chevallard: I’m excited to team up with one of my favorite Miami-based artists, Typoe. The floral print he designed brings a fresh look to the classic wingtip, while creating a whimsical approach to the arts that is classic yet innovative.

Matt Chevallard: I think they’re casual- to each their own. Everyone wears their shoes differently, in different contexts, and thats what I strive to do: create unique footwear for any kind of walk of life.

Typoe: I like the colorful one. The other one is The Webster Edition. This is more my edition I suppose. I’m just a color whore- I like colors and bright flowers.

Typoe: They’re all printed the same way. I came up with it by spray painting on canvas first, then I did a high res scan, and then we printed it. We tried a couple different ways of how it would look, and then we had it printed. We were happy with it. I did some pink stitching throughout the whole shoe to give it a nice little detail. I just wanted it to be an abstract floral, not too literal with flowers everywhere, but just to give you the feel of it.

Typoe: Each shoe comes with a few different options for laces too- you can mix it up and create your own look.

Typoe: This is a series entitled “Bust” because it’s a bust- when you take a mold of someone from the chest up- and then it’s a bust in the sexual sense of the word. I haven’t found a way to put it gently but yeah, that’s what’s happening here.

Zaha Hadid to Design Miami Skyscraper

Zaha Hadid at the Swarovski Crystal Palace Opening Private Dinner at Setai on December 5, 2006

Miami, FL – December 18, 2012 – It’s no secret that Zaha Hadid is the world’s most influential and gifted female architect to date. Her long list of accomplishments includes becoming the first female and first Muslim to earn the architectural equivalent to the Nobel Prize, the Pritzker Architecture Prize, in 2004, as well as winning two consecutive Stirling Prizes, being named one of the world’s top 100 most influential women by Forbes magazine, and assuming the role of Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2012. Just recently, music mogul Pharrell Williams took part in a Design Miami/ sanctioned conversation with the fair’s principal, Craig Robins, where Williams remarked, “sometimes you have to go above and beyond, and Zaha Hadid is above and beyond.”

And we could go on.

With undeniable power and a vision beyond compare for creating structures that are futuristic and evoke thought, Hadid’s genius has reigned over buildings across Tokyo, Paris, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Saudi Arabia and beyond. While Hadid resides mostly in London, the architect has spent a fair share of time on our side of the pond in Miami, where she owns a condo at the W South Beach Hotel and Residences. But Miami has become much more than a second home.

Developers Gregg Covin and Louis Birdman have confirmed that Hadid has been commissioned for her first skyscraper in the western hemisphere in the heart of Downtown Miami. The anticipated structure is to be situated at 1000 Biscayne Boulevard (currently occupied by the BP gas station) and is expected to be completed by 2014. The project will be the single most iconic structure ever to be built in Miami.
