The private occasion, held at their estate welcomed more than 200 supporters out to celebrate the kickoff of the highly anticipated 22nd anniversary of the InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Ball, taking place Saturday, November 12, 2016. Shareef Malnik, Gala Chairman and proprietor of The Forge Restaurant | Wine Bar, announced this year’s theme will be La Nuit de l’Animal (Night of the Animal); whilst rallying excitement for another spectacular sell-out event and what is anticipated to be their largest gala to-date. Shareef also announced the reprise of ball celebrity emcee and documentary filmmaker Gabrielle Anwar. The elegant garden party featured delicious bites, refreshing summer cocktails and cello players provided by Sincronia USA. The afternoon concluded with an endearing speech by Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida wish recipient’s father Craig Kuperman, whose daughter, 15-year old Lauren Kuperman, wish was granted with a trip to Paris, France in 2015, not only making his daughter’s dream of going to Europe come true, but provided a monumental experience that will stay with her, forever. The final ending also concluded with a heartfelt moment where Lauren was introduced to her sponsors Andrew Sasson and Chris Paciello.

InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish Ball

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014

Wayne Newton

Miami, FL – November 1, 2014 – Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida and InterContinental® Miami celebrated their highly anticipated 20th Annual InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish Ball on Saturday evening, allowing guests to follow the yellow brick road into a magical “Oz”-themed celebration. The star-studded Gala hosted more than 900 VIPs, socialites, fashion mavens, celebrities and notable philanthropists with a common goal of raising funds for Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions, to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The evening kicked off with a lavish cocktail reception where guests enjoyed sumptuous culinary offerings and cocktails while bidding on more than 125 premier items at the Ball’s legendary silent auction, donated by top hospitality, entertainment, fashion and luxury brands. Once the ballroom opened for dinner, actress and documentary film director Gabrielle Anwar made her return for the fourth consecutive year as Celebrity MC of the Ball’s very lively live auction. Guests were also treated to an incredible performance by one of the most iconic female artists of all time, Diana Ross. As she took the stage, the Ballroom dance floor filled to capacity, with guests singing along to the superstar’s classic hits including “Baby Love” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” The dynamic Ball had an equally dynamic finale as this year’s edition of the InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish® Nightclub — “Voyage des Papillions” – paid homage to the contemporary Disco movement with an extravagant couture runway show presented by Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour, featuring designers including Emilio Pucci, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana and KAUFMAN FRANCO. DJ Irie kept the crowd moving and grooving with his swift sounds throughout the night in the main ballroom. A hip, after-hours venue, the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Nightclub — presented by InList, and chaired by Shareef Malnik, with Michael Capponi as Vice-Chair, had guests dancing their way into the early morning hours to sounds by DJ Michelle Leshem and producer Sean Drake.

While there are many philanthropists involved, the enduring success of the InterContinental® Miami Make-A-Wish Ball is largely due to the dedicated efforts of Shareef Malnik, Gala Chairman and proprietor of The Forge Restaurant and Wine Bar; Robert Hill, InterContinental® Miami General Manager; and Norman Wedderburn, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida – the trio affectionately known as the “Three Amigos.” In its 20-year history, the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball has raised $16.8 million to grant the wishes of more than 3,500 children from South Florida.  The $2.5 million net revenue raised at the 2014 Ball this past Saturday is a record amount, surpassing the prior record of $2 million net revenue raised at the 2013 Ball.

Make-A-Wish Garden Party

Thursday, May 1st, 2014

Miami, FL – April 27, 2014 – On Sunday afternoon, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida held its annual Garden Party, building excitement for the upcoming 20th Make-A-Wish Ball that will take place in November. Set affront a backdrop of glamour and sophistication, guests enjoyed an afternoon of delicious cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, as well as performances by a group of talented musical performers assembled especially for the event.  Attendees also were able to indulge in an elaborately tiered tabletop candy tower which certainly brought out the inner child in all guests. The private affair was hosted by Lifetime Benefactors Al and Nancy Malnik – whose unprecedented gift of $1 million to Make-A-Wish Southern Florida remains the largest single contribution to the charity – at their Palm Beach county oceanfront estate. The grand finale of the afternoon served as testament to the life-changing power of a Wish. “Wish Child” Joey Giordano Jr. was introduced; he is an 8 year-old cancer survivor whose mother shared his moving story of persevering through his grueling journey, knowing that once he improved he would be able to fulfill his Wish of going on a Disney cruise.

Wishes Do Come True

Friday, November 1st, 2013

Miami, FL – November 2, 2013 – Each fall in Miami, a gala for the greatest cause we can think of draws in the likes of local and A-list celebrities for one purpose and one purpose alone—the kids. This year, the Intercontinental Miami Make-A-Wish ball celebrates with yet another fete for the most-noble cause. Held at The InterContinental Miami Hotel on November 2, this year’s theme is loosely named “magic,” so expect the unexpected, as well as Adam Lambert performing. And while you’re dressed your best and sipping champagne, keep in mind that this isn’t just a party, it’s a party with a purpose.

“Make-A-Wish is an opportunity to give. Putting a smile on the face of children with life-threatening illness is all-satisfying,” explains Shareef Malnik, whose family has been involved with the charity for 19 years. “My parents, Nancy and Al Malnik, became lifetime benefactors of the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball. Nine years ago, they, along with former President, CEO and Founder of Make-A-Wish Nancy Strong, asked me to become Chairman. I have been Chairman now for nine years and two years ago I joined the Board of Directors, as well.”

18th Annual Make-A-Wish Ball – 2012

Norm Wedderburn, Shareef Malnik, Al Malnik, & Robert Hill

As a member of the board, Malnik and his family go the extra mile to make Make-A-Wish stand out from other charity events. At the top of their priority list: Entertainment. “Although our first goal is to raise as much money for the children as possible, it is condition upon the guests enjoying their evening. If people are entertained, they will come back. In the long run, with that philosophy and strategy, we will grant more wishes,” he explains.

In the past nine years, the wish fund has increased from $300,000 to $1,700,000 net proceeds. All toward kids with a dream, too. “This is as a result of charitable contributions from a lot of great people that want to help children,” Malnik says.

Helping draw in those funds is the gala’s celebrity-laden guest list. This year, attendees can expect to see Lambert, as well as Gabrielle Anwar as the celebrity auctioneer. Flo Rida, Miami Housewives and Miami Heat players will also say cheers in the name of charity.

Melanie Amaro & Traver Rains

In past years, stars like Anwar, Melanie Amaro, Paula Abdul, Sharon Stone, Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Venus and Serena Williams and so many more have supported the event. Some of these celebs made last year’s event the most memorable by far for Malnik. “Last year’s ball stands out for several reasons: Gabrielle [Anwar] knocked the ball out of the park with the auction. We raised more money than ever before. And I was forced into a pair of ballet tights in order to offer comedic relief for the audience.”

Malnik is willing to go that extra mile to make sure the event is a success. “Each year my goal is to beat last year, in terms of money raised and entertainment level to guests,” Malnik says.

He applies this same philosophy to the after party. Now in its sixth year, the event will feature DJs and a fashion show by Heatherette designer Traver Rains. While tickets to the ball may be sold out, passes to the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Nightclub are still available for $100 and can be purchased at

18th Annual Make-A-Wish Ball

Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

Miami, FL – November 3, 2012 – On Saturday, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and InterContinental Miami celebrated the 18th Annual InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Ball with a theme inspired by India’s vibrant colors, animated street markets, opulent soirees and jubilant Bollywood music. Melanie Amaro, first season winner of The X Factor and South Florida native, performed, and Burn Notice star Gabrielle Anwar, returned as the celebrity auctioneer for the Ball, which was chaired by Shareef Malnik, owner of The Forge Restaurant l Wine Bar. In its 17-year history, the Ball has raised more than $10.7 million, enough to grant wishes for more than 2,300 children with life-threatening medical conditions.

The Ball’s leaders – affectionately known as the “Three Amigos” – Malnik, also Foundation Board Member; Robert Hill, InterContinental Miami General Manager and Gala Host; and Norman Wedderburn, President and CEO of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida; have together made each Ball an impactful, memorable occasion.

Celebrity auctioneer Gabrielle Anwar returned to the podium to spark a bidding war for an extravagant array of live auction items, including a magnificent prize generously donated by Mark and Robin Levinson of Levinson Jewelers: an ultra-rare Hermès “Cape Cod” diamond-and-ruby watch valued at $33,450. The starlet also tempted the audience with a walk-on roll on her hit USA Network show, Burn Notice, filmed on-site in Miami, and other sought-after auction items donated by THE COLLECTION, The World – Residences at Sea and Ocean Drive Magazine.

For the fifth consecutive year, Nightclub Vice Chairman Michael Capponi of The Capponi Group spearheaded the official Ball after-party at the InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Nightclub, introducing Make-A-Wish Southern Florida to the next generation of contributors. The after party came to life with a fashion show by Traver Rains, who debuted his Bollywood-inspired Spring/Summer 2013 Collection. The InterContinental Miami Make-A-Wish Nightclub served as the perfect backdrop for Rains, who incorporated Indian fabrics and accessories in what was a spectacular ode to all things Bollywood.
