October 14, 2009  annual awards ceremony of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund took place at the Asia Society in New York City. Lu Guang (卢广) from People’s Republic of China won the $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography for his documentary project “Pollution in China.”

garage gold

Rick Norsigian, a local painter from Fresno, Calif., bought a box of old negatives at a garage sale for 45 dollars. A lawyer said that the images have been identified as the work of world -renowned photographer Ansel Adams and are worth at least $200 million.

aftermath

The BP oil spill has been the story in the Gulf this summer, but many still feel the effects of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged much of New Orleans and the coast five years ago this month. To this day, a hundred and fifty thousand displaced New Orleanians still reside in Houston.
