Thoughts on Democracy: Freedom to Vote 2016 at The Wolfsonian-FIU
Miami Beach, FL – August 25, 2016 – The Wolfsonian invited members and VIPs to get political at a VIP sneak peek summer viewing party for Thoughts on Democracy: Freedom to Vote 2016, featuring a first glance at nighttime projections on The Wolfsonian’s building from the chic vantage point of Washington Park Hotel’s rooftop terrace. The evening kicked off at the museum with new poster commissions by contemporary designers Mirko Ilić, Oliver Munday, Paul Sahre, and Bonnie Siegler: our four graphic artists who each tackled the realities and challenges of the American voting process, from voter ID laws to the daunting lines that keep us from casting our ballots. Upstairs, guests explored The Politics of -Isms—the companion library installation that expands on the historical context of combative labels such as fascism, socialism, and communism—and pop outside to check out images from the original Thoughts on Democracy (2008), which “wrap” the Wolfsonian’s iconic Bridge Tender House. Later, guests headed across the street to the Washington Park Hotel for an Art of Illumination presentation on The Wolfsonian façade of a selection of the 2008 posters, which captured issues central to today’s sociocultural concerns in the spirit of Norman Rockwell’s Four Freedoms paintings. It was a night of eye-popping graphic design, with an exclusive preview of the cocktail genius of Employees Only’s Miami outpost, opening later this fall.
